Google Play Protect’s AI Tech Is Doing More Harm Than Good To Users

It wouldn’t be wrong to refer to Google Play Store as the most sought-after designation to get reliable apps, provided you’re an Android user.

The company provides great reassurance that it’s not only reliable but offers the best array of apps that are safe and ready to download. This includes its Play Protect system which works to make sure all malware is kept at bay and malicious apps are removed immediately from the store.

Recently, we’ve been hearing so much about how Google keeps enhancing the system with better features for greater reliability and better user experience. There’s even a new section dubbed App Highlights for these types of additions and the fact that it places reliance on AI technology would make us assume it’s enhanced in performance.

Tech giant Google seems to be cramming AI everywhere and just when you thought it was doing users a favor, we’ve got more alarming reports on that front.

AI efforts on the Play Store do tend to provide a great summary of why a certain download or purchase should be made for a certain app but some users are now reporting questionable actions.

Google researcher Assemble Debug mentioned through a post on X how there were at least three different occurrences where wrong descriptions were provided on the app being displayed.

The AI system selected Audio Editing and Audio Formats as Meta’s WhatsApp’s best features.

Clearly, we agree that using AI is the future and a lot of companies feel this is the way to go, moderation must also be in place to ensure the right amount of supervision is taking place so errors don’t go unnoticed like this one. After all, the last thing you’d want is an app that fails to do everything that it promises to do in the summary or listings tab, right?

We’ve already seen Google’s Gemini chatbot providing some of the most hilarious responses to date for some basic queries. It’s yet to be in the same league as Google’s Assistant but we do hope it’s getting close.
